Ras Fortress (Stari Ras)
Stari Ras — Old Ras — was the first capital of the medieval Serbian state from the accession of the Nemanjić dynasty in 1159. Two fortifications, Gradina-Pazarište and Gradina-Postenje, crown the ridges above the old marketplace of Trgovište.
Why it matters
This is where the Serbian kingdom was effectively born; a frontier stronghold contested by Byzantium and Bulgaria before it became the seat of Serbian power. The archaeological complex is part of the Stari Ras and Sopoćani UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Essentials
- A guide turns the ruins into a story — ask us
- Uneven terrain; wear proper footwear
- Little shade — bring water and a hat
- Best combined with Sopoćani and Petrova crkva
