Sopoćani Monastery, Novi Pazar

Sopoćani Monastery

Sopoćani is the endowment of King Stefan Uroš I, raised between 1259 and 1270 near the source of the Raška river. Its church of the Holy Trinity is the great masterpiece of the Raška school.

Why it matters

The frescoes, painted around 1270–1276, are counted among the finest of the European Middle Ages; the monumental Dormition of the Virgin, covering more than thirty square metres, is famous for a luminous, almost classical light. Sopoćani has been on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 1979.

Essentials

  • Bring a light layer — the stone interior stays cool
  • Photography of frescoes may be restricted; ask first
  • Pair with the nearby Raška spring in one loop
  • Roughly 20 minutes by car from the bazaar
