Jeleč Fortress
The ruins of Jeleč sit on a height south of Novi Pazar, guarding the old road toward the Ibar valley. In the 15th century the fort gave its name to the vilayet within which Novi Pazar was founded.
Why it matters
Little is reconstructed, and that is the appeal: a genuine medieval frontier post reached on foot, with commanding views and none of the crowds. It rewards travellers who like their history wild and unpolished.
