Beyond the City

Day Trips from Novi Pazar

Novi Pazar sits in a bowl of mountains at the meeting point of medieval Serbia, the Ottoman road network and three modern borders — which makes it a spectacular base. Everything below is reachable in a day, and our collective runs private transport for all of it.

1. Sopoćani Monastery — the UNESCO essential (≈ 16 km, 25 min)

The 13th-century monastery whose frescoes are ranked among the greatest achievements of Byzantine art. Combine it with the source of the Raška river and the ruins of Stari Ras for a half-day trip through the cradle of the medieval Serbian state.

2. Đurđevi Stupovi & Petrova Crkva — the hilltop trail (≈ 4 km, 10 min)

Technically barely a day trip: the 12th-century Pillars of St. George and one of the oldest churches in the Balkans stand on hills at the city's edge and pair perfectly into one afternoon walk with valley views.

3. Novopazarska Banja — thermal springs (≈ 3 km, 10 min)

A geothermal spa in use since Roman times, with an Ottoman-vaulted bath built directly over the spring. The lazy day trip. Pair it with the city hamam experience.

4. Pešter Plateau — the Balkan Siberia (≈ 40 km, 1 h)

A vast, treeless highland at 1,150+ meters: sheep, wild horses, birdwatching wetlands and the villages that make Serbia's most famous cheese. Our Pešter tour includes a dairy lunch you will talk about for years.

5. Ribariće–Gazivode Lake — the emerald canyon (≈ 30 km, 40 min)

A 24-kilometer reservoir squeezed between limestone cliffs: kayaking, SUP, motorboat canyon tours, lakeside trout restaurants and legal wild camping meadows.

6. Golija Mountain — the biosphere reserve (≈ 45 km, 1 h 15 min)

UNESCO-protected forest wilderness rising to 1,833 m. Hiking, mountain biking, and in winter a small, quiet ski center — the anti-Kopaonik.

7. Kopaonik — Serbia's biggest ski resort (≈ 90 km, 2 h)

In season, Kopaonik offers the country's largest ski area; in summer, lift-served hiking above the treeline. A long but rewarding day from the city.
