A Local's Shortlist

15 Best Things to Do in Novi Pazar

Novi Pazar rewards curiosity like few places in Europe: a city where UNESCO-listed medieval Serbia, living Ottoman tradition and bold Yugoslav modernism share a single valley. This is our local collective's honest shortlist — the fifteen things we take our own friends to do. For route planning, pair this list with our travel guide and day-trip guide.

1. Wander the Stara Čaršija (Old Bazaar)

Start where the city started: a living Ottoman bazaar of low shopfronts, coppersmiths, tailors and čajdžinice (tea houses). Come early in the morning when the bakeries pull the first mantije out of the oven.

2. Stand before the frescoes of Sopoćani Monastery

A 13th-century UNESCO World Heritage monument whose frescoes are considered the peak of Byzantine painting in Europe — painted decades before the Italian Renaissance found its footing.

3. Sweat it out in a real, working Ottoman hamam

Novi Pazar is one of the very few places in Europe where the hamam ritual never stopped. Steam, marble, a proper scrub, and thermal springs at Novopazarska Banja just outside town.

4. Visit the Altun-alem Mosque

The 'mosque of the golden jewel', one of the finest surviving pieces of 16th-century Ottoman sacred architecture in the Balkans, still in active use.

5. Climb the Novi Pazar Fortress and watchtower

The old fortifications rise directly above the city park. The stone watchtower (Kula motrilja) is the city's favorite sunset spot.

6. Eat mantije with yogurt — properly

Bite-sized meat-filled pastries, baked in round pans and drowned in thick yogurt. This is the dish locals will judge you on. See our full food guide.

7. Tour the Ras Museum

The regional museum collects five millennia of Sandžak history — from Bronze Age princely treasures to Ottoman weaponry and epic oral poetry.

8. See Petrova Crkva, one of the oldest churches in the Balkans

A rotunda church with foundations reaching back over a thousand years, sitting on a hill where archaeologists found a 5th-century BC princely grave filled with Greek gold and amber.

9. Walk up to Đurđevi Stupovi

The 12th-century 'Pillars of St. George' monastery crowns a hill above the city and forms part of the Stari Ras UNESCO ensemble. The view over the valley alone is worth the walk.

10. Drink sand-brewed Turkish coffee

In the bazaar, coffee is still slow-brewed in hot sand (kumda kahve) and served with Turkish delight. Order it, slow down, and watch the čaršija move.

11. Hunt brutalist architecture

Novi Pazar hides one of the boldest brutalist ensembles in the former Yugoslavia, led by the curved Lučna Zgrada. Our architects lead dedicated tours.

12. Catch sunset from the panoramic hills

Ring the city on foot: grassy ridges and viewpoints where the minarets, church towers and tower blocks all layer into one skyline.

13. Cross the Pešter Plateau

The 'Balkan Siberia' — a vast highland of sheep pastures, wild horses and the best cheese in Serbia, under an hour from town.

14. Swim or kayak at Ribariće Lake

An emerald canyon reservoir 24 km long: kayaking, SUP, boat trips past eagles' nests, and lakeside trout restaurants.

15. Go highland hiking on Golija Mountain

A UNESCO biosphere reserve of dense forest and open ridgelines, the wildest green escape within reach of the city.
